KATHARINA GROSSE to exhibit at CHRISTOPHER GRIMES GALLERY.

Christopher Grimes Gallery will present new works on canvas and an installation by Katharina Grosse from April 12 to May 31, 2003. A reception will be held for the artist on Saturday, April 12 from 6 to 8 PM. The gallery is located at 916 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica.

Grosse is perhaps best known for her site-specific wall paintings that organically expand, covering doors, ceilings, win-dows and even moving from room to room. Each Grosse mural is unique, responding to the particular environmental, architectural and social circumstance. Her most recent installation was included in a group show curated by James Rondeau of the Art Institute of Chicago. It was completed outside the Bass Museum in Miami in conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach. The piece will remain indefinitely but has, by nature, a temporary existence.

The artist explores consistency, transparency, and contrast of paint and color while experimenting with technique and painting gestures in both her site specific works and her works on canvas. In some of her paintings she employs a broad brush stroke to make visible the physical effort and temporal activity of her practice. She may also use spray guns, evoking the spontaneity of common street graffiti with the precision of modern colorists.

Grosse is an artist with a significant international reputation. Born in Freiburg/Breisgau, Germany in 1961, she lives and works in D?sseldorf and currently has a traveling exhibit throughout Europe. Her installations have been commissioned by institutions throughout the world including the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Mus?e dâArt Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Artsonje Museum Kyongju, Korea. Her work was also included in the 2002 Bienal de S?o Paulo and the 11th Biennial of Sydney in 1998. This will be her first significant solo exhibition of work in the United States.
