ANTHONY HERNANDEZ 2004 PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANTHONY HERNANDEZ to exhibit at CHRISTOPHER GRIMES GALLERY.
Christopher Grimes Gallery will present a solo show of work by Anthony Hernandez from October 23 November 20, 2004. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, October 23 from 6 to 8 PM. The gallery is located at 916 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica.
As one of Los Angeles’ seminal photographers Hernandez is known for imagery that resonates with a distinctive formal clarity bringing sublime beauty to the fragile relationship between society and its public and private spaces. He photographs the urban environment’s abandoned crevasses and less traveled places putting forth a far less romantic image of a revered metropolis.
Everything began in January 2003, when Hernandez returned to the L.A. River where he played as a child. He traversed the river’s path from Burbank to Long Beach focusing on the littered contents of this, one of Los Angeles’ most critical infrastructures. The river’s intricate tunnel system, documented in time-lapse photographs, and the disposable objects of everyday life found in fetid water makes evident the river’s current relationship with the community as a repository for cultural detritus. A heightened attention to detail, texture and focus is a quality for which the artist is known.
Hernandez lives and works in Los Angeles and has exhibited extensively worldwide. Recent shows include Visions from America: Photographs from the Whitney Museum of American Art; Flight Patterns, MOCA, Los Angeles; Document and Beyond, Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; and Scene of the Crime, Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Guggenheim Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among many other international collections.
Coinciding with Hernandez’s October exhibition, Nazraeli Press will publish a catalog entitled, Everything, with an introduction by M.G. Lord. Lord is a regular contributor to The New York Times Book Review and The New York Times Arts & Leisure Section. Her work has appeared in Vogue, Vanity Fair, ArtForum, the Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Yorker.
