First U.S. solo exhibition for Takehito Koganezawa

Christopher Grimes Gallery will present the first U.S. solo show of work by Takehito Koganezawa.  Dancing in Your Head, a three-channel video installation, will be shown in the Main Gallery and recent drawings in the South Gallery.

Koganezawa's notion of space and time is oriented toward the various rhythms, movements, and currents of people and their ordinary actions. These elements are superimposed upon one another creating a unified, harmonious synchronization between image and soundtrack - irregular in meter with a changing tempo.

Dancing in Your Head is based on 297 short videos and audio tracks of sounds produced by everyday objects such as the snapping of a pair of scissors, the pouring of wine in a glass, and the piercing of an orange with a knife.  The tracks are assembled on 3 DVDs, each composed of 99 tracks.  They play simultaneously on 3 separate channels on random shuffle generating various combinations of actions and sounds.  The base, rhythm and melodies that are generated and unpredictably sequenced refer to experimental music and leave an impression of a home-made laboratory in which, through compulsive time repetition of absurd experiments, formulas for new possibilities are generated.  To quote the artist:

Berlin, Tokyo, New York … they all have a very different relationship between time and city. So I find that time is not very stable.  It floats.  Perhaps my main theme is no longer grasping time, but is more like catching a stream …  or waves.

Koganezawa was born in Tokyo in 1974 where he graduated from Musashino Art University. He has been living in Berlin since 1998 and has exhibited internationally at various institutions such as Berlinische Galerie, Berlin; Wohnmaschine, Berlin; Haunch of Venison, London; Institute of Visual Art, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany; Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery; Institute for Contemporary Art, London; Internationales Filmfest, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; La Biennale de Montreal, Canada; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Queens Museum, New York and Project Rooms, ARCO, Madrid, among others.
